QCWE continues 31st season with Holiday Concert featuring the Big River Brass Band

The 31st season of the Quad City Wind Ensemble (QCWE) continues with a free holiday concert featuring the Big River Brass Band (BRBB).  The concert will be Sunday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m. in the Galvin Fine Arts Center, 517 W. Locust St., on the campus of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA.  The event is free and open to the public.  This is the 5th year the BRBB has been featured during the holiday QCWE concert.

The QCWE is conducted by Brian Hughes, who was recently named a finalist in The American Prize award for band/wind ensemble conducting.  In 2012 the QCWE was the Community Division winner of The American Prize in Band/Wind Ensemble Performance.  The QCWE was founded in 1987 by Dr. Charles B. The BRBB was co-founded by Ed Butterfield, retired band director for Rock Island High School and Jerry Miller, John Deere retiree.  Miller saw a picture of the Deere Cornet Band in a book about Deere’s history and decided to revive a brass band using Deere employees in order to carry on the Deere tradition. Since 2006, regular concerts have been played in Aledo, Geneseo, Rock Island, Moline, Bettendorf, and at the Festival of Trees in Davenport. Now conducted by Nicholas Propes, the BRBB plays in the style of European brass bands and draws literature from classic brass band, jazz arrangements for brass band, and continues to search for new music.  For additional information, please visit their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/bigriverbrassband

 QCWE announces 2016-2017 Season and Fall Concert

The 31st season of the Quad City Wind Ensemble kicks off Sunday, October 23rd at 3:00pm.  Conducted by Brian L. Hughes, the Fall Concert program will include music by Clifton Williams, Alberto Ginastera, Vincent Perischetti, and John Barnes Chance.  The concert will immediately be followed by a reception with free refreshments and homemade treats. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and FREE for all students through 12th grade.

The 2016-2017 season will also include Holiday (December 11), Winter (February 26, 2017), and Spring (May 13, 2017) concerts, in addition to the Young Performers Competition in March 2017.  All concerts will take place in the Galvin Fine Arts Center, 518 W. Concert Dates Now Finalized

The date of our Spring Concert has now been finalized, and with that last detail, our season is now all set!

Fall Concert: October 23, 2016 @ 3:00pm
Holiday Concert: December 11, 2016 @ 3:00pm
Winter Concert: February 26, 2017 @ 3:00pm
Spring Concert: Saturday, May 13, 2017 @ 7:30pm

Additionally, the Charles DCamp Young Performer’s Competition will be Sunday, March 5th, 2017.

QCWE announces Winter Concert “Musica Nova”

The 30th season of the Quad City Wind Ensemble continues Sunday, February 28th at 3:00pm.  The QCWE is conducted by Brian L. Hughes, 2015 winner of the American Prize in Wind Band Conducting (school and community division).

The Winter Concert: Musica Nova, consists entirely of music written by living composers and no piece predates 2001. The program will include music by Daniel Montoya, Jared Beau, David Maslanka, Rick Kirby, and QCWE favorite Julie Giroux. Also included will be the premiere performance of a work by Kenyon Wilson; QCWE was one of the commissioning groups of this memorial of the 2015 Chattanooga, Tennessee, shooting tragedy. The concert will immediately be followed by a reception with free refreshments and homemade treats. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and FREE for all students through 12th grade. The concert will take place in the Galvin Fine Arts Center, 518 W. Locust St, Davenport, on the St. Ambrose University campus.

Congratulations Brian!

Congratulations to Quad City Wind Ensemble conductor Brian Hughes on winning the 2015 American Prize in conducting, Band/Wind Ensemble: Community/School Division.

This is actually the second American Prize for Brian. He was conductor when the QCWE won the American Prize in 2012 in Band/Wind Ensemble Performance: Community Division.

Founded in 2009, The American Prize is a series of new nonprofit competitions designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, ensembles and composers in the nation based on submitted recordings. Winners receive cash prizes, professional adjudication and regional, national and international recognition based on recorded performances.
